ASTM A252 is the standard specification for steel pipe piles in which the steel cylinder acts as a permanent load-carrying member or as a shell to form cast-in-place concrete piles. This specification covers nominal (average) wall steel pipe piles of cylindrical shape.
1. Tensile Requirements (Yield Strength)
| Property | Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3 (Standard) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min | 50,000 psi | 60,000 psi | 66,000 psi |
| Yield Strength, min | 30,000 psi | 35,000 psi | 45,000 psi |
💡
Industry Note: While ASTM A252 Grade 3 requires a minimum yield of 45,000 psi, many engineers now specify "Mod Grade 3" with a minimum yield of 50,000 psi to 60,000 psi to match structural tubing grades.
2. Chemical Requirements
The steel shall contain no more than 0.050% phosphorous. Other chemical limits are generally determined by the specific manufacturing process (Seamless vs. Welded).
| Phosphorus, max | 0.050% |
| Carbon (Typical) | 0.22% - 0.26% (Not strictly limited, but typical for weldability) |
| Manganese (Typical) | 0.90% - 1.20% |
3. Permissible Variations
| Outside Diameter (OD) | Shall not vary more than +/- 1% from the specified diameter. |
| Wall Thickness | Shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified. |
| Weights | Each length of pipe pile shall be weighed separately and shall not vary more than 15% over or 5% under its theoretical weight. |
