How to Calculate Pipe Pile Concrete Volume
When installing pipe piles, specifically Open-Ended driven piles or Drilled Shafts using steel casing, estimating the concrete volume accurately is critical to avoid ordering shortages or excessive waste.
The Formula
Unlike standard cylinder calculations, steel pipe requires you to account for the wall thickness to find the true Inside Diameter (ID).
1. ID = OD - (Wall Thickness × 2)
2. Area = π × (ID ÷ 2)²
3. Volume (in³) = Area × (Length × 12)
4. Cubic Yards = Volume (in³) ÷ 46,656
2. Area = π × (ID ÷ 2)²
3. Volume (in³) = Area × (Length × 12)
4. Cubic Yards = Volume (in³) ÷ 46,656
Note on Waste Factor: This calculator provides the theoretical volume based on perfect geometric dimensions. In real-world piling applications, we recommend adding 5% to 10% to account for:
- Over-excavation (in drilled shafts)
- Spillage during the pour
- Undulations in the soil or bedrock
