GAS, OIL & DRILL PIPE

API 5L Line Pipe, OCTG, and Drilling Tubulars for the energy sector.

The Energy Lifeline. Steel pipe for the oil and gas industry is divided into three critical categories: Line Pipe (Transportation), OCTG (Well Construction), and Drill Pipe (The Tool). Each serves a unique purpose and requires strict adherence to API standards.

1. Line Pipe (API 5L)

Line pipe is the "highway" that moves natural gas, oil, and water across land. It is available in Seamless, ERW, and DSAW types depending on the required operating pressure.

Common Grades
  • Grade B: Standard pressure (General use)
  • X42 - X52: Medium strength transmission
  • X60 - X70: High Yield (High-pressure lines)
Common Coatings
  • FBE: Fusion Bond Epoxy (Standard)
  • 3LPE: 3-Layer Polyethylene (Rough terrain)
  • ARO: Abrasion Resistant Overcoat (Directional Drilling)

2. OCTG (Casing & Tubing)

Oil Country Tubular Goods refer to the permanent pipe installed vertically in the well.

Casing (The Shield)

Large diameter pipe (4.5" to 20") cemented into the ground to keep the hole from collapsing, isolate pressure zones, and protect groundwater aquifers.

Tubing (The Straw)

Smaller pipe (2-3/8" to 4.5") run inside the casing. This is the removable conduit that actually brings the extracted oil or gas to the surface.

3. Drill Pipe

Unlike OCTG, Drill Pipe is not left in the ground. It is the heavy-duty seamless steel pipe that rotates the drill bit and circulates drilling fluid (mud) back to the surface.

Type Primary Role Key Feature
Standard Drill Pipe Transmits Torque Tool Joints (threaded ends) are thicker/larger than the pipe body.
HWDP (Heavy Weight) Transition Zone Flexible but heavy. Acts as a buffer between rigid collars and standard pipe.
Drill Collars Weight on Bit Extremely thick-walled and heavy to push the drill bit into the formation.
