Common Monopole Applications
Highway Billboards
Single-pole (monopole) billboard structures typically require large diameter pipe, ranging from 24" OD up to 48" OD, with heavy wall thicknesses (often 0.375" to 0.500"+) to prevent the massive sign face from acting like a sail and bending the pole.
Telecom & Cell Towers
While lattice towers use smaller angle iron, modern cellular "monopine" or monopole towers rely on vertically stacked steel pipe sections. These sections often telescope (stepping down in OD size) as the tower gets taller to reduce weight.
Fabrication & Splicing
Sign poles are almost always taller than the standard 40-foot length of a single pipe joint. Therefore, proper splicing and base fabrication are critical.
- Base Plates & Gussets: The highest stress point of any pole is where it meets the concrete foundation. Pipe is welded to heavy steel base plates, often reinforced with triangular steel gussets to distribute the bending moment.
- Mid-Air Splicing: To reach heights of 80 to 100 feet, pipe sections are welded end-to-end. Often, a slightly smaller "stinger" pipe is inserted inside the joint as a backing ring to ensure a full-penetration structural weld.
- Coatings: Since surplus line pipe often comes with external epoxy or coal tar coatings, it must be sandblasted down to bare metal before it can be primed and painted for visual appeal.
