GALVANIZED PIPE Specs

The industry standard for outdoor corrosion resistance. Schedule 40 & Schedule 80.

Galvanized Pipe is carbon steel pipe that has been coated with a protective layer of zinc. The zinc acts as a sacrificial layer that will rust before the steel underneath does, extending the life of the pipe by 50+ years in outdoor environments.

Standard Dimensions & Weights

The table below details the most common sizes for galvanized pipe (ASTM A53). Weights include the added mass of the zinc coating.

Manufacturing Types

1. Hot-Dip Galvanized

The pipe is dipped into a bath of molten zinc (850°F). This coats the inside and outside with a thick, dull grey layer. This is the most durable method (ASTM A123).

2. Pre-Galvanized (In-Line)

Made from a steel sheet that was galvanized before being rolled into a tube. The exterior is shiny/silver, but the coating is thinner. The weld seam is sprayed with zinc after welding.

Pipe vs. Fittings

If you are building handrails or plumbing systems, you will need to connect the pipe. Because welding destroys the zinc coating (and releases toxic fumes), galvanized systems typically use Threaded Connections.

Galvanized FAQ

Common safety and application questions.

Warning: Welding galvanized steel releases zinc oxide fumes which causes "Metal Fume Fever" (severe flu-like symptoms). If you must weld it, you must grind the coating off the weld area first and wear a high-quality respirator.
Generally, No. The zinc coating can flake off inside the pipe and clog gas regulators. Black Steel Pipe (uncoated) is the standard for Natural Gas and Propane lines.
It depends on the soil acidity, but generally, galvanized pipe will eventually corrode underground (20-30 years). For permanent underground use, we recommend Coated Pipe (Coal Tar or Epoxy) or PVC.
