ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) is the industry standard for mid-sized pipe (2" to 24"). Often referred to as "Straight Seam" pipe, it is manufactured by cold-forming a ribbon of steel into a round shape and welding the seam using high-frequency electricity. This creates a bond where the weld is virtually invisible and as strong as the parent metal.
Availability & Specs
ERW pipe is available in a vast range of conditions, from high-pressure line pipe to surplus structural tubing.
| Size Range | 2-3/8" O.D. to 24.00" O.D. |
| Common Grades | API 5L (Line Pipe) ASTM A53 (Standard Pipe) ASTM A500 (Structural Tubing) ASTM A252 (Piling) |
| Lengths | Single Random (20'), Double Random (40'+), and Cut-to-Length up to 60'. |
| End Finish | Beveled, Square Cut, Threaded & Coupled (T&C), or Torch Cut. |
Common Applications
Because it combines high strength with tight dimensional tolerances, ERW is used across all sectors:
Infrastructure
- Pipe Piling: Foundation piles with attached points/plates.
- Bollards: Concrete-filled security barriers.
- Sign Poles: Highway signage and billboard supports.
Energy & Utility
- Line Pipe: Oil, gas, and water transmission.
- Water Well: Pump column and drilling casing.
- Fencing: Livestock corrals and high-security fencing.
💡 Did You Know?
ERW pipe production began in the 1920s, but early "Low-Frequency" methods sometimes suffered from seam defects. Around 1962, the industry revolutionized the process by switching to High-Frequency (HFW) welding.
Today's HFW process produces a normalized weld seam that is tough, reliable, and virtually free of the defects found in pre-1960s pipe.
Coatings & Fabrication
We can connect you with master distributors and structural steel suppliers offering custom fabrication services:
